We’ve all seen people who spend years building a dream home only to have it burn to the ground or blow away in a tornado. Or, maybe someone restores an old car, takes it for a spin, and ends up totaling it. Maybe someone trains an animal to race or show, but disease forces them to put it down in its prime.
We shake our heads, sigh, and say, “What a shame and what a waste.”
Parents, you’ve pumped 16-18 years of your life into your most valuable assets-your kid! Especially if you’ve homeschooled them, you have more sweat equity in them than any other project you ever have or will undertake. Wouldn’t it be the biggest loss of all for them to crash and burn at the end of their journey to adulthood?
Unfortunately, that’s what’s happening to a lot of “good kids” from “good families”. The kids go off to college and end up walking away from their families and their faith and turning their back on all the things their parents and churches taught them. It’s difficult to be out on your own at college, under the influence of professors and peers you like, and stand firm on what you were taught growing up when you start getting conflicting messages.
Is there hope? Yes! Check out a new book at The Family Vision Library. Rooted in Truth: Answers to Life’s Questions for College Students attempts to end this trend. Authors Trent A.Rogers and Jonathan A. Wood spent years working with college students in the classroom and in campus ministry, so they have the experience and the knowledge to address the topic with relevance. They wrote this book to help college students grow in their faith during college, rather than forsake it.
This book is said to be “…a clear, concise, and compelling resource to help students deepen their biblical thinking during a vital season of their lives.” It’s arranged into four categories, each with five chapters. Categories include: Christian Living, Christian Vocation, Christian Apologetics, and Christian Relationships and Dating. Interesting? Yes, and meant to provoke “kids” to want to know more than what the book provides. The result? The reader starts digging into Scripture and seeking spiritual guidance, like that found in Bible-believing churches, rather than turning away from Scripture and church.
If you’re worried about your investment’s future, I recommend this book. You should read it. Let them read it. Classes are starting up soon, but it’s not too late. The book is not very long and it’s engaging. Maybe tuck a copy in by those chocolate chip cookies in their first care package. Even if they are starting to pull away already, a little homesickness is often enough to make them check out what Mom and Dad find important.
Copies are limited at the library, so you may have to place a reserve. This good read is also available for purchase on Amazon and at Christianbook.com. It is so relevant, you and your kid will not have to look far for another reader with whom to share. You’ve invested so much already, don’t neglect to protect that investment! And sharing it will be sort of like the “compounding interest effect”!
The Family Vision Library and Consignment Store also have more resources available on these topics and almost anything else that interests you. Come visit to browse the collection and the store. We are here to help you find just the right book for all the needs you have.
See you soon!
